Member Update Week of June 21st, 2021

To all members,

Ontario will be entering Step Two on Wednesday June 30th at 12:01 am and this is great news for many of you!  We are heading in the right direction and that is encouraging!  I am amazed at how you have persevered and stuck it out throughout this pandemic, shifting and changing and going above and beyond for your customers.   As you are busily preparing for this next step, PLEASE don’t forget to let us know if you plan to be open on Sundays!   We don’t want you to miss out on our Summer Sundays promotions!   We hope to have the full list of businesses ready to share with downtown customers the week of July 5th, email ambassador@downtownorangeville.ca ASAP with your Sunday hours.

Canada Day – Statutory Holiday Reminder

In accordance with the Town’s Retail Business Holiday Exemption By-law, retail stores ARE permitted to be open on Canada Day.

If you plan to be open on Canada Day, don’t forget to let your customers know via your website and social media and tag us in your posts BEFORE July 1st so that we can get the word out!

Canada Day Messaging

In light of the horrific discoveries at former Residential Schools, there is a movement to cancel Canada Day celebrations this year.   For this reason, we recommend that members are sensitive in their Canada Day messaging and promotions.

Many think this is should be a time to pause and reflect, to listen and to learn.  If this rings true for you there are a few opportunities that might be good places to start:

Dufferin County Cultural Resource Circle (DCCRC) is an Indigenous-led community whose mandate is to create a safe space for the restoration and revival of traditional Indigenous Culture in the Dufferin County area.

The DCCRC invites you explore the resources on their website and to visit the Mino Kamik Medicine Garden for quiet reflection.  Visitors are also invited to draw a chalk outline of their feet, to leave a pair of children’s shoes or moccasins, or to paint and leave an orange stone in honour of the Residential School children.

A Day to Listen, Amplifying Indigenous Voices – Wednesday, June 30th  6 am – 6 pm on My FM  101.5.

This is a great opportunity to listen and learn.  If you are not sure what to talk about with your customers and social media followers, this is a great one to share.
